This tick gets its common name from its overall reddish brown color and that it is common on dogs. Although the brown dog tick is the species most commonly encountered indoors, it rarely attacks man.

Habits

These ticks may attatch themselves anywhere on a dog. The adults typically attatch on the ears and between the toes, but larvae and nymphs typically attatch on the back.

Habitat

Typically does not do well outdoors in the woods. They prefer warm, dry conditions where dogs live. They do not travel far after engorgement and dropping off the host.

Threats

Ticks can spread Lyme Disease.

Prevention:

The homeowner/occupant of the infested home and/or the owner of the infested home must thoroughly clean the home and remove all debris to remove/eliminate as many ticks as possible. Pet bedding and resting areas should receive careful attention.
